So you’ve provided a product or service to an individual or company, but when it comes to receiving the payment, they’ve decided not to pay and disappeared nowhere to be found. It can often be quite hard to chase debtors, companies can move premises, change trading names and telephone numbers can be disconnected.

So how can you find the debtor to get what is owed to you?

Businesses have started turning to Private Investigators to chase up their debts as soon as they become overdue as the longer they are left, the harder it is to recover payment. Most Private Investigators offer ‘Debtor Tracing’ services to trace the debtor and recover the money owed so that you remain financially secure, keeping cash circulating in your business. Anyone can employ an Investigator to find the current address of a debtor, it’s as simple as a telephone call.

Businesses or Individuals can then able to apply to the County Courts for a judgement against the debtor to reclaim the money, if the debtor is becoming evasive. In short, the debtor can be served a Court Order to say that they will need to respond to the Courts detailing why they have not made satisfied the outstanding debt. If they are still found to owe the money, then a judgement will be issued and will set out how the debt is to be repaid.

With the recession still hitting companies and the general public, this is a becoming a common occurrence. A study in 2011 showed that on average, 1,779 County Court Judgements (CCJ’s) are issued every day.

Alternatively, if the debtor is pleading they don’t have enough money to pay your outstanding debt, then Private Investigators can be also hired to carry out an ‘Asset Search’, also known as a ‘Pre-Sue Enquiry’. This type of report can show whether the debtor has any assets at all that could be removed by a Bailiff or High Court Enforcement Officer to satisfy the outstanding debt. It can also show any other important information such as if they have had any County Court Judgements, or Bankruptcies against them, which would make reclaiming any further monies from them unlikely and allow you to avoid throwing any more money after this ‘bad debt’.

If you currently find yourself in a position where a company or an individual owes you money, then act now. The longer it is left, the harder it will be for you get what is owed to you. Hiring a Private Investigator will help you to find the debtor efficiently and effectively and start the process of reclaiming what’s yours.
